Florida governor urges EPA to cut ethanol requirement to save cattle industry

October 22, 2012 |

In Florida, Governor Rick Scott is urging the federal government to temporarily eliminate the fuel requirement for corn ethanol in an attempt to rescue the state’s cattle industry. The governor sent a letter to the US Environmental Protection Agency explaining that drastically reduced corn supplies following this year’s drought are causing cattle feed prices to soar. This has reduced the market price for Florida feeder calves that are normally sent to the Midwest to fatten up on corn, costing Florida cattlemen $80 million so far this year.
