The 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy for 2012-13 are announced

October 30, 2012 |

In California, Renewable oils developer Solazyme took the #1 spot in the 2012-13 “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” rankings, announced today by Biofuels Digest at Advanced Biofuels Markets in San Francisco.

KiOR (#2), LanzaTech (#3), Novozymes (#4), POET (#5), DuPont Industrial Biosciences (#6), Gevo (#7), Sapphire Energy (#8), Joule Unlimited (#9), and ZeaChem (#10) round out the top 10.

Ranked #11 through #20 are Honeywell’s UOP, BP Biofuels, LS9, Chemtex / Beta Renewables, Amyris, Virent, INEOS Bio, Enerkem, Abengoa Bioenergy and Ceres.

The rankings, which recognize innovation and achievement in bioenergy development, are based 45 percent on votes from invited international selectors, 45 percent on votes from subscribers of Biofuels Digest and Biobased Digest, and 10 percent on votes via Twitter. More than 300,000 individual company ratings were logged by selectors, subscribers and Twitter voters, in total, in the 2012-13 Hot 30 and Hot 50 rankings.

“This year, companies that stayed truest to their guidance and met their milestones, were rewarded by the voters,” said Biofuels Digest editor and publisher Jim Lane. “Companies in the pre-IPO queue and accompanying “quiet period”, or going through re-branding or acquisition, suffered in the polls from the reduced visibility.”

Among the Hot 50, 37 were US-based companies and 13 were from other countries. 17 are active in cellulosic ethanol development (up from 15 last year), nine utilize algae, yeast or cyanobacteria in their microbial energy solutions (up from seven last year), and 14 are producing “drop-in” renewable biofuels such as biobutanol, renewable diesel, green gasoline and renewable jet fuel (down from 16).

New companies in the list this year are: DSM (#24), Butamax (#28), Valero (#37), EdeniQ (#38), Boeing (#40), Ensyn (#44), Renewable Energy Group (#45), Dyadic (#46), Catchlight Energy (#49) and Fiberight (#50).

Biofuels Digest is the world’s most widely read biofuels daily. The Miami, FL-based online magazine and email newsletter published more than 4,000 news stories on bioenergy in 2012, and serves 133,000+ newsletter, website readers and social media followers in every UN-recognized country.
