In Illinois, Chicago Biofuels is looking into sunflower oil as a possible feedstock. The company currently focuses on using cooking oils from city restaurants, but is looking into planting sunflowers in the cities vacant lots as sunflowers can remove the polluting lead from the soil in these lots. The company harvested 11 pounds of seeds last year, but is looking into grant potential to develop this technology on a larger scale.
