Biofuels Digest’s 2012 Special Editor’s Award (sustainable technology) – CleanStar Mozambique

December 31, 2012 |

BD-2012-AwardsCleanStar Mozambique doesn’t fit easily into any of the typical award categories. But it deserves an award all its own.

As we have pointed out in the past, the fumes from traditional three-stone cooking or from diesel-operated cookstoves are dangerous to the health of young people in developing countries. Bad air doesn’t get nearly the publicity as, say, viruses — but it is just as dangerous in the long-run as many well-publicized diseases.

Cleaner fuels can help – especially in rural areas where electrification is a long-term dream and deforestation is a problem not only for the environment, but young children who must travel farther each day to collect firewood.

We were delighted to read that the Soros Economic Development Fund and the Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries today announced investments of nearly $9 million in CleanStar Mozambique, with the option to invest more in potential pan-African expansion. CleanStar Mozambique will be able to support 2,000 smallholder farming families to increase production of nutritious staple food crops and surplus cassava, with the latter being used to make ethanol-based cooking fuel.
