Sorghum may be next ethanol feedstock of choice in Nebraska

March 6, 2013 |

In Nebraska, Trenton Agri-Products is among the local ethanol plants pushing for more local sorghum production to help compensate for high corn prices. The facility can easily switch between corn and sorghum for its 50 million gallons of annual production without having to do any refitting. In the past it has substituted up to 30% of its corn demand with sorghum but would go up to 100% if there was enough supply. A poor snow pack this winter could impact the state’s ability to irrigate which may lead to more farmers planting sorghum than thirsty corn this spring.
