EU member states divided on ILUC proposal

March 25, 2013 |

In Belgium, battle lines are being drawn among member states regarding the European Commission’s proposal to mitigate ILUC. Only the UK, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands clearly favor concrete action on tackling ILUC, while others are less convinced that ILUC is happening or that it is the EU’s job to regulate what happens in third countries. Euractiv quoted Ed Davey, Britain’s climate and energy minister, as saying: “We’ve made a real mistake in the EU [on biofuels] and we’ve got to end that mistake, the sooner the better.” Environmental ministers from the EU27 met last week while energy ministers meeting on Feb. 22 also had similar conclusions.
