In Cameroon, Reuters reports that Herakles Capital has been forced to stop work on a 60,000 hectare palm oil plantation by the government. Herakles is a venture capital firm based in New York, and states it is working with the government to resume work. The stoppage was caused by protests by a combination of villagers voicing concerns about their ability to hunt or grow food crops, as well as WWF and Green Peace. The article states that the latter two have alleged that the project has the potential to impact the livelihoods of the locals, violates Cameroon law, and possibly endanger wildlife. Meanwhile, the government of Cameroon will be assessing of the project’s public usefulness to the region.
