US Senate Armed Services Committee votes down anti-biofuels amendments

June 17, 2013 |

In Washington, the US Senate Armed Services Committee narrowly voted down amendments aimed at curtailing the military’s biofuels program and lifting a ban on the purchase of carbon-intensive fuels last night.

The Truman Project’s Operation Free spokeswoman Stephanie Dreyer commented:

“We were initially disappointed to see that House lawmakers chose to launch another attack on DoD’s clean energy initiatives in last week’s debate over the National Defense Authorization Act. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed once again as the Senate Armed Services Committee voted to continue to support the DoD’s efforts to move beyond our single-source dependence on fossil fuels. Our military leaders have been clear: developing next generation fuels and using energy smarter are national security imperatives.  The military is developing technologies that are promoting energy security here at home and enhancing the mission capability of our deployed forces.

Today’s news is a victory for our military’s energy security, helping ensure that we develop technology to diversify the fuels that power our military’s vehicles, ships, and aircraft.  I’m confident that our elected leaders will continue to support these vital programs going forward.”
