French study questions reliability of European ILUC evaluation

July 1, 2013 |

In France, ILUC factors used by the European Commission are inconclusive and vary considerably, according to a study completed by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). The study compares the different models used, and how these models use very low values for increasing yields of cultivated areas in the EU. The European Biodiesel Board welcomed the publication of the study, and noted that “The study shows that a consistent yield calibration in models leads to simulation results reducing by 80 percent the ILUC figures for biodiesel (10g CO2/MJ against 55gCO2/MJ in IFPRI).”
