Novozyme’s enzymatic biodiesel technology heads for Viesel Fuel and Florida

July 18, 2013 |

In Denmark, Novozymes has supplied its enzymatic biodiesel technology to Viesel Fuel, the Stuart, FL-based biodiesel producer which has been converting millions of gallons of waste grease into a petroleum replacement product every year since 2008. Viesel Fuel is pioneering the use of the Novozymes technology on a commercial scale in North America. The Novozymes enzymatic process requires less energy than traditional biodiesel processes, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions at a higher rate. Moreover, by using the enzymatic process, the byproduct, glycerin, has significantly lower contamination and hence a higher value as a byproduct. Viesel has obtained approvals from the EPA as a fuel additive and as an approved biomass based diesel under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program.
