Iowa expected to import corn to meet ethanol demand

July 24, 2013 |

In Iowa, a new study says the state will likely have to import corn this year to supply its ethanol plants that are finally back up and running because the harvest this fall isn’t expected to be enough to supply demand. Last year’s drought mixed with flooding during spring planting this year has meant a poor looking crop. Iowa is currently looking at 149 bushels per acre, down from the national average of 152 bushels and far down from its typical harvest of more than 180 bushels.
