Southern corn heads up the Mighty Miss to produce Midwestern ethanol

In the Midwest, corn from southern farmers is headed north to Midwestern ethanol plants, reversing a centuries-old trend of southern-going corn barges headed down the Mississippi River. Southern corn is typically exported but last year’s drought means low supplies in the Midwest and high enough corn prices that exports have fallen to a 41-year low.
