BASF hopes to penetrate US automotive industry with new biocomposite

In Minnesota, at the 13th annual Automotive composites Conference & Exhibition, BASF granted tours as part of the opening. Plastics Today reports that BASF demonstrated a prototyping line for a woven kenaf and foamed water based Acrudur acrylic latex binder resin biocomposite. The materials were then put in a radio-frequency dryer.

BASF is pushing to get the US automotive industry to use the biocomposite. The production line is part of BASF’s Wyandotte R&D center. Henning Karbstein was quoted as stating, “It comes down to cost and performance for the automotive industry… The environmental benefits are icing on the cake.” The article stated that process produced no VOC’s.
