Miscanthus farmers look for alternative markets ahead of cellulosic ethanol

September 16, 2013 |

In Ohio, farmers that planted miscanthus as part of a $5.7 million Biomass Crop Assistance Program grant in 2011 don’t yet have the $200 million cellulosic ethanol plant in Ashtabula County that they were expecting to sell their harvest to, but there appear to be 40 other uses that they can sell their crops for until the plant comes online. Aloterra Energy who is leading the project says the technical process for the plant should be finalized in the next 12 months and then another two to three years to get the plant online. In the meantime, anything that uses fiber—from paper making and packaging to livestock bedding—are potential markets for the crop.
