Italian biodiesel-powered Navy ship visiting Lithuania

November 19, 2013 |

In Lithuania, from November 19 through 25 the Caio Duilio destroyer of the Italian Navy will be conducting a friendly visit in Klaipėda. The technologically advanced battleship in service with the Italian Navy since 2009 is unique as its engine runs on biodiesel. The ship is drawn into a naval biofuel certification project with a long-term goal of formulating a unique biofuel also suitable for aircraft and land vehicles.

NATO and European armed forces have been increasingly focusing initiatives and measures on enhanced military energy efficiency. That not only opens up opportunities for saving energy and financial resources but also cuts the rates of the damage to the environment. During the visit the potential of using the biodiesel and its advantages will be presented to representatives of the Ministry of National Defence, the Lithuanian Armed Forces, and other Lithuania’s institutions.
