December 24, 2013 |

In Colorado, Colorado Springs Utilities is starting a one-year trial on Jan. 1 to produce 4.5MW of energy from 60 tons of wood chips per day. The wood will be co-fired with coal and 2.5MW of the energy will be sold at a premium to Fort Carson who contracted the more expensive, greener energy. The fuel supply and delivery will cost about $1 million and sourced from a 50 miles radius of the Drake Power Plant where the trial will take place.
