HECO and Zilka in discussions regarding the use of wood pellets for electrical generation

In Hawaii, Zilkha Biomass Energy is reported to be in preliminary talks with HECO regarding the use of Zilkhas wood pellets. According to an article in the Kansas City Star, Zilka is stating that the use of wood pellets could save the utility as much as 30% in costs compared to fuel oil.

The article states that a LOI has been signed. The article quotes Peter Rosegg, a HECO spokesperson as stating in an email, “We have met with representatives of Zilkha Biomass. No commitments have been made at this time. It is a promising technology but further study and evaluation are needed to determine whether this option provides a cost benefit to our customers.”
