Alkol to develop hybrid sugarcane for Spain with UPM

February 24, 2014 |

In Spain, bioenergy consultant Alkol has signed an agreement for developing a new hybrid sugarcane with UPM- Universidad Poltécnica de Madrid. Because many of Europe’s biomass sources are not competitive in global markets, this project is hoping to create a new sugarcane with more fiber, that is resistant to lack of water, and that will offer yields of 200 tonnes per hectare, more than five times what currently biomass options yield in Europe.

According to Al Costa, CEO of Alkol , “We are pleased to have a leading center as is the UPM ETSI participating in our project. This project is different in Spain among all renewable energy projects as it requires no subsidies and that it will bring foreign expertise. Whether we like it or not, biofuels are the only alternative to existing materials and fossil fuels. This variety of sugarcane will be the main source of biomass in the European biofuels policy of 2020, and it takes the advantage that, in Europe, only in Spain sugarcane can grow.”
