Poor rail conditions continue to support Midwest ethanol futures

In Illinois, sluggish return times for rail cars mean that ethanol prices in Chicago, traded as Chicago R11, are up $1.07 per gallon in the past month at $3.16. Little ethanol is available for prompt delivery, boosting spot prices. It’s the highest price Platts has assessed since it began doing so on Sept. 1, 2011. Midwest ethanol plants remain shuttered due to having reached their storage capacities thanks to snow playing havoc on rail transport.
