American Biomass Council applauds Obama methane reduction plan

March 31, 2014 |

In Washington, the American Biomass Council applauded the Obama administration’s newly unveiled national plan to reduce methane emissions. The construction of new biogas systems is supported in the plan, as biogas systems convert organic materials which might otherwise be the source of methane emissions into renewable electrify and fuel, as well as soil amendment that reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers.

The Strategy to Reduce Methane Emissions is a part of the Obama administration’s Climate Action Plan which was released last June. The methane strategy includes three specific provisions which help the biogas industry: the creation of a National Biogas Roadmap; an agreement between the USDA and U.S. dairies to voluntarily reduce agricultural methane emissions by 25 percent by 2020; and the direct support of biogas system deployment by providing financial and technical assistance through voluntary programs.
