Iowa’s Grain Processing Corp to pay $1.5 million in environmental fines

In Iowa, Grain Processing Corp has been ordered to pay $1.5 million civil penalties for breaking environmental rules and as part of its settlement must transition to natural gas from coal. The fuel switch will happen by July 2015. Total upgrades to the facility will cost between $15 million and $17 million while operating costs will increase $1 million a year in addition to as much as $12 million a year extra in fuel costs.
