Sailing education vessel being installed with biodiesel engines

May 6, 2014 |

In Rhode Island, the state’s official sailing education vessel— SSV Oliver Hazard Perry—is being built to be as environmentally friendly as possible, all the way down to running on biodiesel-powered engines when it’s not running on wind. The 200-foot square-rigged tall ship is the largest vessel of its kind to be built within the last 100 years. On board living will focus on sustainability by reducing food waste, reducing water use and treating what water is used, as well as reducing trash overall.
