Heard on the Floor: The Buzz from the BIO World Congress

BIO-2014

BIO was buzzing about:

  • Policy stability, technology stability, price stability, feedstock supply stability. And the common term is…?
  • Aromatics
  • When in doubt, succinic.
  • Are major players waiting to pick up technologies cheap?
  • Abengoa: cellulosic ethanol by Q3.

Delegates at the World Congress were also buzzing about news from Australia that the federal government has slashed support for renewable energy, in its first budget since a Liberal-National Party coalition was swept into power on a platform which called for the repeal of the unpopular carbon tax. The new Government is proposing to: – Abolish the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, saving $1.63 billion. – Cutting spending on the Carbon Capture and Storage Flagships Program by $459.3 million through 2019-20. – Cutting funding for CSIRO, the government’s scientific research agency, by $11.4M over four years. – The government will also eliminate the biodiesel and ethanol subsidies, saving a projected $276 million — but will cut excise taxes on both fuels.
