USDA may regulate GM sorghum as noxious weed

January 6, 2015 |

In Washington, the USDA is contemplating regulating a GM sorghum variety developed by Ceres as a noxious weed. The company developed the variety using a “gene gun” to create an energy crop with more biomass and higher sugar content than others that would increase ethanol yields. The USDA can’t regulate the crop under its biotechnology regulations, nor does it believe it is a potential plant pest, but still may have the variety listed as a noxious weed.
