World clean energy investment up 16% in 2014, hitting $310 billion

January 12, 2015 |

World clean energy investment in 2014 rose 16% in 2014 to $310 billion, with offshore wind in Europe and solar in China and the US as the main drivers. This marks the first year since 2010-2011 that investment actually rose.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s annual data highlights China as the strongest performance by far, and solar as the biggest share of total clean energy investment (almost half of the total, its highest share ever, thanks to its hugely increased cost-competitiveness).

While total new money invested in 2014 came close to matching the 2011 figure, the total amount of new capacity built in 2014 was nearly double of that what had been built in 2011. This shows how much further a renewable energy dollar goes now than it did just a few years ago.
