Radical, dude: world’s first surfboard made from algae

April 26, 2015 |

In California, Solazyme’s oils have been instrumental in creating the world’s first algae-based, sustainable surfboard. Solazyme supplied its innovative algal oil to scientists at UC San Diego, who in turn used these sustainable oils to create an algae-based surfboard. The surfboard was publicly unveiled and presented to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer just before Earth Day.

“In the future,” Solazyme noted, “algae oil will not only allow surfers to enjoy an environmental sustainable surfboard, but construct their boards in a way that can make them more adaptable to different kinds of surf, surfing styles or even the surfer’s weight. This new application of Solazyme’s oils underscores the innovative, flexible and sustainable capabilities of microalgae.”
