E85 drops to more than $1 lower than wholesale gasoline
In Iowa, the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association’s E85 Wholesale Price Listing Program detailed that E85 is priced at up to a $1.14 discount to petroleum-based gasoline, a 50% overall discount per gallon and representing a savings, on an energy-density or cost per mile basis, or up to 29% lower.
According to the wholesale price listings, E85 (which contains between 70 and 85 percent ethanol), is wholesaling at Absolute Energy at $1.15 per gallon and $1.15 from Little Sioux Corn Processors. At the other end of the scale, E85 is being offered by HollyFrontier at as much as $1.80 per gallon, which is not cost-competitive with gasoline. The break-even point for E85, based on $2.28 per gallon wholesale gasoline, is around $1.64.
