In Canada, IEA Bioenergy Task Force 39 has released a new newsletter including a profile on New Zealand. According to the report, woody biomass is the predominant form of bioenergy in the country, typically used for household and industrial heating uses, with nearly 80% of the country’s electricity coming from renewable sources yet almost all of the country’s transport fuel is imported, opening a major opportunity for liquid biofuels. About 4.2 million liters of conventional biofuels were consumed in 2014 in addition to 1.5 million liters of ethanol imports, yet there are is no biofuel mandate nor are there incentives to boost consumption which is frustrating local producers.
