BNSF 32-car train derails with at least 18,000 gallons of ethanol leaking into the Mississippi

November 9, 2015 |

In Wisconsin, following a 32-car derailment in Buffalo County on Saturday morning, five of the BNSF tankers are said to be leaking ethanol into the Mississippi River, the company says, without posing a threat to the public. About 150 local residents were voluntarily evacuated shortly after the accident but have since returned to their homes. The company is working to clean up the spill that is estimated at more than 18,000 gallons of ethanol and the other cars including those that fell into the river or are on their sides. BNSF hoped to be able to reopen the line late Monday.
