British Columbia wants Alberta and Saskatchewan to join Low Carbon Fuel Standard

In Canada, British Columbia’s Energy and Mines Minister has challenged Alberta and other provinces to follow its lead on low carbon fuels in response to other COP 21 pledges that focus on GHG emissions reductions that don’t tackle fuel. The province introduced a Low Carbon Fuel Standard in 2008 mandating a minimum of 5% renewable content in gasoline and 4% in diesel, with the mandate working up to 10% by 2020. Most of BC’s fuel is refined in Alberta where the blending to comply with the LCFS takes place, but none of the blended fuel stays in Alberta. Alberta and BC are in an alliance with Saskatchewan, all three of which the minister says would benefit from having the same fuel.
