Massachusetts cooperative invests $3.5 million in UCO biodiesel facility

December 14, 2015 |

In Massachusetts, Coop Power has invested $3.5 million to build the state’s first community owned biodiesel plant in Greenfield. The facility, set to come online next month, will use used cooking oil collected from neighboring restaurants, schools and the like to produce biodiesel for trucks, buses as well as heating. The company says there is little of this type of fuel available in the region so decided to get involved to ensure that it remained local without need to seek outside investment that could eventually see the project derailed if the investor’s strategy shifted.
