UP surpasses Maharashtra as largest ethanol producing state

January 6, 2016 |

In India, low sugar prices helped Uttar Pradesh surpass Maharashtra as the country’s largest ethanol producing state at 560 million liters produced in 2015 against its rival’s 520 million liters. Combined, they produce about 61% of the country’s ethanol, followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Of UP’s 61 distilleries, 36 are co-located at sugar mills and all produce fuel ethanol with 300 million liters expected for intra-state consumption and the rest to be exported to neighboring states.
