E85 vehicles slow to pick up in Finland but new St1 Biofuels plant could help

January 13, 2016 |

In Finland, just 3,400 E85 vehicles were sold in 2015 through September compared to 146,000 new cars registered during the whole year. The figure may look small, but its part of a wider movement towards alternative fuel vehicles, which saw a 40% increase in 2015. With St1 Biofuels’ new 10 million liter sawdust-based ethanol plant coming online the end of last year, the fuel will supply E85 blends throughout the country. Concerns about ethanol’s starting capacity in extremely cold temperatures has had a dent on flex-fuel vehicles but consumers are starting to learn that once the engine starts, it runs just like gasoline.
