USDA highlights benefits of rural development grants with eye on bioenergy

In Washington, the USDA has highlighted the economic impacts on rural communities bioenergy investments have made in a new report looking at the $1.1 billion granted for renewable energy through 15,678 individual awards between 2009 and 2015. Rural Energy for America Program guaranteed loans and grants, Biorefinery, Renewable Chemical, and Biobased Product Manufacturing Assistance Program loans, and payments made under the Repowering Assistance and Advanced Biofuels Programs were included in the report. Highlights included a $63,000 payment from USDA Rural Development that helped Maine Standard Biofuels transform used cooking oil into valuable, sustainable consumer products.
