Hawaii still blending ethanol thanks to RFS but not happy about it

February 2, 2016 |

In Hawaii, filling stations continue to market ethanol-blended fuel despite the mandate having been eliminated a month ago. Ethanol-free gas is available in limited quantities and is more expensive than the blended fuel that continues to be available due to compliance regulations with the Renewable Fuel Standard. If oil companies don’t blend in Hawaii, they’ll have to buy RINs to make up the difference. Blending economics at the moment still favor blending even if the state regulations aren’t in favor of it.
