$95M advanced ethanol, jet fuel project for Jamaica
In Jamaica, Benchmark Renewable Energy will develop a 10 million gallon per year advanced ethanol project in Jamaica that will also produce 3 MW of renewable power. The company said that its project would also produce 500K gallons of drop-in aviation fuel and 60,000 gallons per day of fresh, desalinated water. The company, which is evaluating technology packages, said it expects the project to be complete by the end of 2017, and could grow ultimately to a capacity of 20 million gallons, The comnpany said that it will utilize sweet sorghum as a feedstock and will use up to 3000 hectares for feedstock. The proposed project would create up to 140 direct and 500 indirect jobs.
Briceno told reporters, “We were looking for a place with Sugar Cane growing tradition and good climate to achieve maximum yields of our proposed feed stock crop Sweet Sorghum. In addition, we envision that over time, Jamaica will become a net exporter of renewable biofuel as the country is also strategically located to export biofuels into the US Market.”
Benchmark said it is collaborating with the Jamaican Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, JAMPRO, the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the National Environment and Planning Agency, and SCJ Holdings.
