Canadian biofuel industry may be in trouble due to perfect storm

March 10, 2016 |

In Canada, the International Energy Agency says national ethanol production could fall to just over a billion liters by 2020 from 1.68 billion liters in 2015 while biodiesel production should hold steady at 348 million litres thanks to a perfect storm of competition from US imports, low oil prices and the end of the ecoENERGY biofuels incentives program in 2017, among other factors. The biofuels industry believes that a true price for carbon along with policy supporting reduction of greenhouse gas emissions would be enough to ensure the industry is healthy moving into the future.
