SDSU teams with UF to develop carinata aviation biofuel for the Navy

March 23, 2016 |

In South Dakota, researchers from South Dakota State University have teamed with counterparts from the University of Florida to develop aviation biofuel from carinata seed for the Navy. The two states have complimentary growing seasons for carinata, allowing it to be grown for fuel nearly all year long. The South Dakota Oilseeds Council says that carinata-based aviation biofuel has better performance values in jet engines than other feedstocks. Only about 100 acres are currently grown in the state but as demand ramps up for commercial production, prices are likely to initially be tied with canola before breaking off when more supplies create their own market.
