Whopping 75 mills start off Brazilian crush two weeks early

March 23, 2016 |

In Brazil, 75 sugarcane mills are already online as of mid-March, far more than the 20 open during the same period last year, as they rush to crush what is expected to be a record-breaking cane harvest. The early phase of the crush is typically dedicated to more ethanol than sugar production due to weather conditions that aren’t quite warm enough to favor sugar production, with more than 70% of cane so far going towards ethanol. Hydrous ethanol prices have fallen more than 5.5% in the past two weeks from record highs set during that period.
