Neste to start larger UCO trial for NExBTL

In Finland, Neste is set to start trialing UCO as a feedstock for NExBTL at its Kilpilahti refinery in Porvoo where the company may produce as much as 20,000 metric tons of the fuel through the trial period that will last until the end of 2017.

The company already held a much smaller trial in 2015 producing 2,000 tons but the batch was too small and results were inconclusive. Biofuels News is reporting that UCO will account for only 0.2% of the feedstocks the company uses to produce its NExBTL, however Neste notes that the figure “0.2%” refers to the possible share of UCO used at the Porvoo refinery including all raw materials (renewable and fossil).

Neste adds that “Also, fossil raw materials are included and does not take into account that we might also use UCO at our refineries.”
