Women carrying disproportionate burden resulting from Chisumbanje Ethanol

July 28, 2016 |

In Zimbabwe, researchers from the CGIAR program Collective Action and Property Rights found that women have been disproportionately impacted by the Chisumbanje Ethanol Project. The communities in the area near the sugarcane ethanol project, including the 3,000 homes that were displaced, have lost their capacity for food sovereignty and are suffering from worsened poverty. Whereas men travel to South Africa or Mozambique in search of work, women have been left behind to care for and feed families with little resources available. As many men are polygamous, not enough land was provided to support the women, forcing them to see other activities such as selling firewood and water collection while some girls are forced into early marriage.
