UK company takes obnoxious weed and commercializes briquettes with it

September 5, 2016 |

In the UK, Brackenburn believes it is the first company to commercialize bracken as a biofuel, harvesting it from a 100-mile radius around its factory in Somerset and producing briquettes for heat production. The nuisance weed covers 250,000 acres of the West Country. The company plans to harvest 1,200 metric tons of bracken this fall, up from 300 tons last year, and has expanded its factory to facilitate the jump in production. Creating jobs in rural areas for unemployed youth as been a priority for the company.
