New study shows Australian canola meets EU’s GHG emissions thresholds for biofuels

September 20, 2016 |

In Australia, CSIRO has published a study funded by the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre and the Australian Oilseeds Federation showing the European Commission that the country’s canola meets not only the EU’s 35% GHG emissions reduction threshold but also the 50% threshold set for 2018. As European canola producers till their land, emitting nitrous oxide, and the higher use of fertilizers compared to Australian production methods, a market opportunity to supply the biodiesel market can open up. The first of its kind report looks at GHG emissions of canola production on a state-by-state basis.
