In Minnesota, Enerkem is exploring the development of a $200 million MSW-to-ethanol facility outside St. Paul in conjunction with local garbage processor and recycler SKB Environmental. The project was presented to city officials in May and last week the company submitted for zoning approval changes to allow the facility on a site currently zoned for agricultural use. Wood construction waste rather than organic waste that is currently composted or that which is currently recycled would be the main feedstock. The 40 million gallon per year site would process 400,000 tons of feedstock annually.
