Reverdia, Gingko BioWorks, Rennovia, Leaf Resources, Mango Materials take top slots in The 40 Hottest Emerging Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy 2016-17

In Florida, Reverdia took the #1 spot in the 2016 “40 Hottest Emerging Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy” rankings, published today in The Digest and Nuu, the world’s most widely-read advanced bioeconomy dailies. Last year, Reverdia ranked #12.

Gingko BioWorks (#2), Rennovia (#3), Leaf Resources (#4), Mango Materials (#5), Calysta (#6), Bolt Threads (#7), Zymergen (#8), RedRock Biofuels (#9), and NexSteppe (#10), rounded out the top 10.

Ranked #11 through #20 are Altair Fuels, Impossible Foods, Beyond Meat, Caribou Biosciences, SilicoLife, GranBio, Oberon Fuels, Comet Biorefining, Sustainability Consult, and Cool Planet.

A record number of new companies

With a new generation of companies based in advanced genetics, a shift in global commodity prices, mergers and significant progress towards commercial-scale by many companies, a record 25 companies reached the Hot 40 for the first time in 2016. They are:

Bolt Threads (#7), Altair Fuels (#11), Impossible Foods (#12), Beyond Meat (#13), Caribou Biosciences (#14), SilicoLife (#15), GranBio (#16), Sustainability Consult (#19), Modern Meadow (#22), Ripple Foods (#23), Novvi (#25), Arzeda (#27), A Perfect Day (formerly Muufri, #28), Vertimass (#29), Mercurius Biorefining (#30), Gen9 (#31), Photanol (#32), Hampton Creek (#33), Blue River Technology (#34), Ynsect (#35), Sylvatex (#36), Celtic Renewables (#37), Clara Foods (#38), AgBiome (#39), and AVA Biochem (#40).

In addition, none of the top five companies had previously ranked in the top 10.

Companies around the world

Overall, 30 companies founded in the US were recognized in the rankings, and 10 from other countries including Brazil, Canada, The Netherlands, France, Australia, Switzerland, Portugal and the United Kingdom made the list.

The rankings recognize biotechnology innovation and achievement in fuels, biobased chemicals, nutrition, health, genetics and materials. They are based 50 percent on votes from an invited panel of distinguished international selectors, and 50 percent on votes from subscribers of The Digest and Nuu.

Overall, more than 100,000 individual company ratings were received from panelists and voters in the annual Hot 40 and Hot 50 rankings. The Hot 40 recognizes smaller, emerging companies founded in the past 7 years.

The Miami, FL-based Digest  and Nuu serves more than 2.3 million unique readers and followers via the web, newsletters, social media and broadcast in every UN-recognized country. The rankings have been conducted annually since 2008.
