Study shows health of pregnant Nigerian women improves with ethanol cooking

November 23, 2016 |

In Nigeria, a study led by researchers from the University of Chicago found that pregnant women switching to cooking with ethanol from fuel wood may mitigate cardiovascular health risks. Following the study, 80% of the 324 pregnant women evaluated are still using the ethanol stoves rather than switching back. In the study, biomarkers were studied using fuel wood, kerosene and ethanol as cooking fuels. Further results from the study including maternal health and birth outcomes will be published in early 2017 thanks to funding from the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and DFID.
