Mumias Sugar importing molasses from Uganda and Tanzania to fill supply gap from cane shortage

November 28, 2016 |

In Kenya, for the past eight months Mumias Sugar has been importing molasses from Uganda to produce ethanol but it is now awaiting its first arrival of imported molasses from Tanzania. Falling sugarcane production has led to the need to draw on regional supplies, with the first Tanzanian shipment accounting for about 600 metric tons via Lake Victoria. About 300 tons of molasses is required per day to produce ethanol at its 120,000 liter per day facility.
