Sterling Ethanol leaks 500 gallons of lye but no expected water impact

February 7, 2017 |

In Colorado, about 500 gallons of lye, a liquid form of sodium hydroxide, spilled at the Sterling Ethanol plant near the town of Sterling but laboratory tests from the nearby Platte River have shown that if any of the chemical reached the water that levels were well within limits. It is not thought that any of the spill reached the river or drinking water and was much smaller than originally expected when the accident was called in. Local and state authorities responded to the call.
