British Columbia bioenergy industry at risk from focus on large-scale hydro

In Canada, the new Site C hydroelectric dam currently under development on the Peace River in British Columbia has the bioenergy industry concerned it may be pushed out as the massive project swings the local energy market into surplus and reduces demand for other power supply projects like bioenergy. The province had prioritized bioenergy in a 2008 strategy but the new government seems keener on larger-scale projects like the dam, which in turn is likely to impede innovation in the bioenergy sector.
