March 3, 2017 |

LanzaTech took the #1 spot in the 2017 “50 Hottest Companies in the Advanced Bioeconomy” rankings, published today in The Digest, the world’s most widely-read bioeconomy daily. It was second year at the top for LanzaTech, which also ranked #1 two years ago.

Amyris (#2), Renewable Energy Group (#3), Novozymes (#4), Avantium (#5), BioAmber (#6), Genomatica (#7), DSM (#8), Neste (#9) and Gevo (#10) rounded out the top 10.

Ranked #11 through #20, respectively, are POET, Green Biologics, Enerkem, POET-DSM, Honeywell’s UOP, BASF, DuPont Industrial Biosciences, Fulcrum BioEnergy, ADM and NatureWorks.

The annual rankings, which recognize innovation and achievement in fuels and integrated biorefinery development, are based on votes from an invited panel of distinguished international selectors and subscribers of The Digest.

“This year, the voters went global in picking companies founded in New Zealand, the US, Denmark, the Netherlands, France and Finland in the top 10,” said Digest editor and publisher Jim Lane.  “And of the four US companies in the top 10, three are operating plants in other countries.”

“A new wave of companies has arrived in the Hot 50 this year using synthetic biology in amazing ways — companies like Ginkgo, Bolt Threads and Impossible Foods.,” noted Lane. “Also, the selectors continue to focus on companies that are reaching scale or deploying second and third commercial-scale facilities.”

Major movers for this year were Avantium (from #19 to #5), Neste (#30 to #9), Gevo (#18 to #10), Green Biologics (#22 to #12), (Honeywell’s UOP (#41 to #15), Fulcrum BioEnergy (#36 to #18), NatureWorks (#29 to #20) and NexSteppe (#45 to #29).

Companies in the list this year that did not appear in 2016 are: UPM (#50), Aemetis (#48), Edeniq (#46), Praj Industries (#42), Impossible Foods (#39), Bolt Threads (#35), Novamont (#32), Anellotech (#31), Oberon Fuels (#30), and Ginkgo BioWorks (#27).
